Carer Training Courses — Practical Care Skills for Carers, PAs and Employers
The Disability Resource Centre offers a growing range of training courses for carers, Personal Assistants (PAs) and anyone who wants to build practical care skills with more confidence.
Our training is designed to be accessible, supportive and relevant to real-life caring situations. Some sessions are free, some are funded programmes, and we also offer specialist workshops through our wider Care Academy activity.
Whether you are completely new to caring, already working as a PA, or supporting a family member at home, training can help you feel more confident, better informed and more prepared.
Training Through the Care Academy
DRC's Care Academy has delivered workshops based on the Care Certificate for many years, helping people develop their skills and understanding across the care sector.
The current direction of the programme is broader than ever, with care training being opened up to carers and anyone who wants to learn vital care skills, as well as PAs.
Training may be available through:
Face-to-face workshops
Online learning
Live group sessions
Specialist one-off training events
If you are unsure which training is right for you, our team can help point you in the right direction.
Topics Covered
Training opportunities vary over time, but DRC's courses and workshops have included topics such as:
Understanding your role as a carer or PA
Duty of care
Equality, diversity and inclusion
Working in a person-centred way
Privacy and dignity
Health and safety
Fluids and nutrition
Mental health awareness
Dementia awareness
Emergency first aid
Visual impairment awareness
Palliative and end-of-life care
Moving and handling
Some courses are particularly useful for unpaid carers looking to build confidence at home, while others support PAs and employers with the practical standards expected in care settings.
Who These Courses Are For
Our carer training is suitable for a range of people, including:
Unpaid carers supporting a family member, partner or friend
Personal Assistants already working in care
People interested in becoming a PA
Employers who want to better understand the PA role
Anyone who wants to build practical, person-centred care skills
The aim is not just to deliver information, but to help people feel more confident and capable in real situations.
Why Training Matters
Good training helps carers and PAs:
Build confidence in day-to-day care
Understand good practice and professional standards
Improve safety for themselves and the person they support
Learn practical responses to real-life care situations
Develop skills that can support career progression
For unpaid carers, training can also make caring feel less daunting and reduce the sense that you have to work everything out alone.
