Carers Helping Carers — Peer Support for Unpaid Carers Who Understand

April 20, 20262 min read

Caring for someone you love can be rewarding, but it can also feel overwhelming, isolating and exhausting. Many unpaid carers spend so much time focused on the person they support that their own wellbeing gets pushed to the bottom of the list.

That is exactly why our Carers Helping Carers programme exists.

Carers Helping Carers is a peer-led programme that brings unpaid carers together to share experiences, encourage one another and access support from people who truly understand what caring involves. It is built on something simple but powerful: carers often feel less alone when they meet other carers who "get it".

What Is Carers Helping Carers?

Carers Helping Carers is a supportive community for unpaid carers. It offers a space where you can talk openly, swap practical ideas, build confidence and connect with others who are navigating similar challenges.

The programme is led by people with lived caring experience, which means the support feels real, relatable and grounded in everyday life.

You do not need to have everything figured out before joining. Whether you are new to caring or have been in that role for years, you are welcome.

What You Can Expect

Through Carers Helping Carers, unpaid carers can benefit from:

  • Regular peer support meetings

  • Friendly events and activities

  • Practical tips from people with lived caring experience

  • Emotional support in a non-judgemental setting

  • Opportunities to meet other carers locally

Sometimes the biggest difference comes from hearing someone say, "I've been there too."

Why Peer Support Matters

Peer support is not about being given a one-size-fits-all answer. It is about feeling heard, understood and encouraged by people who know the day-to-day reality of caring.

For many carers, that can mean:

Feeling less isolated

Gaining new ideas for coping with challenges

Building confidence to ask for help

Discovering local services, opportunities and useful resources

Having a place where your own needs matter too

At DRC, we know carers need support in their own right, not just as part of someone else's care.

Who Is It For?

Carers Helping Carers is for unpaid carers who want connection, encouragement and practical support from others in a similar situation.

You might be caring for:

A partner

A parent

A child

A family member

A friend or neighbour

If you provide unpaid care and support, this programme is for you.
